Faculty & Staff Awards
Academic Excellence Award
The recipient of this award is a faculty or staff member whose primary focus is on the academic
development of students in the African American community. This person encourages students
to reach their academic potential and is responsive in aiding students in their academic success
through mentoring, tutoring and/or referring students to the appropriate resources, etc. They provide
students with an insight into educational aspirations direction in the graduate school process and life
in general.
Community Service Award
The recipient of this award demonstrates a leadership role by dedicating hours of commitment to
the African American community at the University of California, Irvine. They are actively involved in
community service, both on and off campus. This person represents selflessness in helping others
and making a difference in the African American community.
Outreach/Retention/Recruitment Award
The recipient of this award has an ability to connect with students in the African American community
on an individual and/or institutional level and maintains a relationship with students throughout their
career at UC Irvine. This individual not only helps in the recruitment of new students to join the UC
Irvine family, but also makes an effort to reach out to current students who need additional support to
ensure that they graduate.
New Professional Award
The recipient of this award is a new (within the last 3 years) and upcoming faculty or staff member of
the University of California, Irvine and has made an impression in the African American community.
This person shines with potential in taking on leadership roles and bringing new light to the
community. They have established a presence on the campus as an advocate for African Americans
and have great potential for institutional influence.
Alumni Award
The recipient of this award is a graduate of the University of California, Irvine who represents
a willingness to give back to the community. This individual has maintained strong ties to the
academic, social or cultural interests of the African American students on the UC Irvine campus. The
recipient of this award is a role model and exemplifies the achievements that we look for from future
graduates of UC Irvine.
B.L.A.C. Award
The recipient of this award is a faculty, staff member or an alumnus who embodies the spirit of
giving back. This all-around recipient not only has contributed in the areas of academic excellence,
community service and outreach, but also has gone above and beyond in the advancement of the
African American community at UCI.
